Bruce - Unfortunately, this sounds exactly like the hundreds of scams we hear about each week at the Embassy. We strongly recommend that your uncle breaks off all contact with this woman and particularly that he does not send any further money.

If this woman is in genuine distress, she should contact the U.S. Embassy in London. The Embassy will never refuse to assist an American in distress. Please also note that the Embassy does not involve itself in disputes over inheritance money. This is strictly a private legal matter.

My Uncle is involved in what I believe to be a scam. A lady is claiming that she is in the UK, and over the last few months has had various situations arise including the death of her mother (requiring several thousand dollars to bury), her loss of luggage at the airport (requiring $50 per day in storage to be paid for it's release). The loss of a laptop (again more money). There is an endless line, involving tens of thousands of dollars, which he has sent. He is convinced she is real, which is the problem. She now states that she is working with the US Embassy and all she needs is another ten thousand to release her 3 million dollar inheritance.
The story is so ludicrous as to defy all logic, but he is convinced of it's truthfulness.
She states she is living with a barrister in London by the name of John Wolfe.
Her name is Susan Jones.

Please Help

I appreciate the info that I found here. I was asked to send money by a girl I met online to a travel agency in the UK. To get over being scammed that way, I told her that I would purchase the airline ticket myself here in the states, to bypass the agency. She finally gave in, but told me British law states that she had to have a BTA to come into the US. I came across your site, realized my instincts were right. I was being scammed. You saved me $670.00. I found the IP address in Nigeria as well. Thx again!

Thank you so much for posting this. I met someone online who said he was in the UK and needed a BTA to visit the US. Luckily I googled and found this page - you just saved me over $2000. After I checked his emails and his IP address was in Nigeria, not even the UK

chigozie - Appointments for notarial services at the embassy are not currently available. We hope to be able to resume these services soon.

Information about notarizing a document using the British two step system is available from the Embassy website, here.

If you require a document notarized information about how to do so under the British two-step system is available from our website, here.
