Jock Whittlesey Environment Counselor - U.S. Embassy London
Jock is a State Department diplomat currently serving as the Counselor for Environment, Science, Technology and Health (ESTH) at the U.S. Embassy in London, UK. He arrived in August 2007 and will be in this job until summer 2010.
His job is to promote understanding and cooperation on a wide range of environmental and scientific issues, particularly climate change, between the governments and other stakeholders in the United States and the United Kingdom. He serves as the Permanent Representative of the United States to the International Maritime Organization.
His prior diplomatic postings have included Amman, Jordan (2004-2007) as the Middle East Regional Environmental Officer; Beijing, China (2001-2004) as an Environmental Officer; Guangzhou, China (1999-2001); Kingston, Jamaica (1995-1997); and Athens, Greece (1993-1995).
Before entering the Foreign Service, he worked as a computer programming consultant from 1980 - 1992 in Washington, DC, California, and Hong Kong.
He received an M.A. in Geographic Information Systems from the University of Maryland (USA) College Park in 1989 and a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978.
