Information on Working in the United States

U.S. Armed Forces

There is no procedure by which an alien may enlist in the United States Armed Forces from abroad. Permanent resident status, a prerequisite for enlistment, requires that the alien qualify for an immigrant visa to enter the United States. We regret that an immigrant visa cannot be issued on the basis of your intention to enlist. Further information is available from the office of the Defence Attaché (DAO).

Police Force

The United States has no national police force. Each state and municipality has its own rules and regulations regarding eligibility for police service within its jurisdiction, and most require law enforcement officers to be United States citizens. For information about working for any U.S. police force, you should write to the Chief of Police of the city where you wish to work or to the Secretary of State of the state concerned. Federal law enforcement agencies, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, require their employees to be U.S. citizens. It is unlikely that a person seeking employment based immigration as a police officer will obtain the requisite sponsorship from the police authority.
