Warden Message from U.S. Embassy London

The morning of July 7, 2005, several explosions occurred at Underground stations throughout Central London. There were also confirmed explosions on London buses in Central London. British Prime Minister Tony Blair has stated in a public address that these explosions appear to be the result of a terrorist attack. UK government officials have confirmed some deaths and numerous injured. There are currently no reports of American citizen casualties. The Underground system is not running and access to Central London has been restricted. London bus service, and tourist and other private bus services, are also suspended in Central London. Airports remain open and flights are arriving and departing normally, and National Rail Services are operating on a limited basis (for train information, visit www.nationalrail.co.uk). Mobile phone systems are reaching their capacity and may work only intermittently. The U.S. Embassy is closed to the public, except for emergency services, until further notice.

The Embassy advises American citizens to defer all non-essential travel to the London area until further notice and to attempt to contact their loved ones in the UK to confirm their welfare. The public should refer to media news outlets for the most current information. For inquiries about the welfare and whereabouts of American citizens who may have been in the vicinity of the explosions, please contact the Department of State 24-hour call center number at 001-888-407-4747. As the Department continues to develop information on any potential security threats to U.S. citizens overseas, it shares credible threat information through its consular information program documents, available on the Internet at http://travel.state.gov. In addition to information on the Internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.
