On Saturday, 18 March 2006, a large march/rally, is expected to assemble at Parliament Square and end with a rally in Trafalgar Square. The Metropolitan Police of London estimate between 10,000 and 20,000 participants. The march/rally has been planned by "Stop the War Coalition," and coincides with a possible "Anarchist Day of Action," which up to a further 5,000 protestors may attend.
The protestors plan to assemble at Parliament Square at 12 noon. The march route is:
Victoria Street Buckingham Gate Grosvenor Place Hyde Park Corner Piccadilly Haymarket Trafalgar Square
While this march/rally will be extremely well policed, road closures are planned and significant traffic disruptions are expected near the march route and around Trafalgar Square. If you have plans to visit London, exercise common sense combined with personal safety measures.
As always, we remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations.
