29 December 2006 Warden Message from U.S. Embassy London
Security in light of the Saddam Hussein verdict
On December 26, 2006, Iraq's Appeals Court upheld the death sentence against ousted President Saddam Hussein, who was found guilty of crimes against humanity. Despite this being an Iraqi decision, Saddam’s execution may prompt unrest and anti-American demonstrations. We wish to remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the area of demonstrations and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. American citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events and take appropriate steps to bolster their personal security.
For the latest security information, Americans should regularly monitor the Department's web site at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Travel Warnings, and Public Announcements can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S., or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
Americans living or traveling abroad are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate through the State Department's travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov, so that they can obtain updated information on travel and security where they are traveling. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
You may also contact the U.S. Embassy in London at (020) 7499-9000. Embassy hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (excluding U.S. and UK holidays). In case of an emergency, a consular officer is on duty 24 hours a day.
