02 October 2007 Embassy presents author Saf Manzoor at the British Library
On October 2, the Embassy partnered with the Eccles Centre for American Studies at the British Library to present Sarfraz Manzoor discussing his recent book, Greetings from Bury Park, Race, Religion and Rock 'n' Roll. Manzoor’s book, also known as “How Bruce Springsteen Changed My Life,” discusses how popular culture (specifically music, and more specifically American music) colored his childhood as an émigré from Pakistan to Britain in the 1970s, through to his response and analysis of 9/11 and 7/7. It was recently published here by Bloomsbury Press and will be published in the U.S. next spring.
Approximately 60 guests attended the evening, and there was a lively discussion on topics ranging from the Boss, to pop culture as an outlet for expression, to issues of identity in the UK and U.S. Attendees were invited to partake in a brief iftaar just before the event.
Sarfraz presents to British Library guests on American music and pop culture’s effects on his life. Renowned academic and columnist Dominic Sandbrook (left) was the guest chair for the event.
