Special Envoy on Northern Ireland Paula Dobriansky
The U.S. Government welcomes the findings in the September 2008 Independent Monitoring Commission report. The report highlights the transformation of the Provisional IRA, concluding that the organization "is set on and will remain on the political path." The report also notes that the PIRA "Army Council by deliberate choice is no longer operational or functional." The U.S. Government commends the IMC for its important work.
"This report underscores the transformation that has taken place in today's Northern Ireland, and signals that all parties should move forward to create a fully functioning political environment for the benefit of all the people there," Special Envoy on Northern Ireland Paula Dobriansky said upon release of the report. "It is another indication that progress continues which should lead to a more hopeful future for the people of Northern Ireland."
