Transitting the United States by plane to Canada

If you are eligible to travel visa free under the Visa Waiver Program and you have a round-trip ticket that takes you back through the United States you will not require a visa if your stay in the Canada and the

United States is less than 90 days.  If your combined stay, even if you are only in transit through the United States, is 90 days or more, you will require a visa.

If you are eligible to travel visa free under the Visa Waiver Program and you have an onward ticket that takes you to a destination outside of Canada, Mexico or the adjacent islands, you will not require a visa.  The 90 day period will not apply in your case as your return journey is not through the United States.

If you are not eligible to travel visa free under the Visa Waiver Program you will require a visa, even if you are in transit in the United States for only a few hours.

If you are not sure if you qualify for visa free travel, check out our Visa Waiver Wizard.  If you require a visa, call our Operator Assisted Information Service who will be happy to assist you.

    Hello

I live in the UK with my husband. I’m travelling to Colombia to visit my parents and my newborn niece. The ticket I’m considering to buy has a stop in either Newark international airport or Houston airport, so I’m aplying for a C1 visa.

I don’t have any contacts in the US and I’ll be stopping for a few hours in the airport until my next flight. Therefore when I fill the details fo the address where I’ll stay in the US can I put the airport details? And do I need to bring my flight booking to the interview as proof of my travel purpose?

    Thanks for your help.

Naty – If you are only transiting the United States, you should enter the airport details as the address where you intend to stay. Please note; you are advised to bring all travel details and booking reservations to your visa interview.
